- St. Ann’s Bay Hospital
- May Pen Hospital
- Savanna-La-mar Hospital
- Annotto Bay Hospital
- Black River Hospital (recently made a type B hospital)
These are listed in order of demand
The higher positions on the list fill up more quickly. Since Black River Hospital was recently upgraded to a Type B hospital for interns, the demand and number of available positions are still uncertain.
Please note that you will receive high-quality training regardless of your placement. Hospitals with lower demand often have fewer doctors, which means interns get more hands-on responsibilities and learning opportunities.
When choosing your preferred hospitals, consider the location and available amenities in the surrounding town.

Classification of Hospitals for Internship in Jamaica
Type A Hospitals
(Tertiary & Teaching Hospitals)
- University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI)
- Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH)
- Kingston Public Hospital (KPH)
- These hospitals are tertiary referral centers that provide specialized care, advanced medical services, and teaching for medical students and residents.
- They tend to have more subspecialties, cutting-edge medical technology, and more complex cases compared to Type B hospitals.
- UHWI is affiliated with The University of the West Indies (UWI) and is a major teaching hospital.
Availability & Competitiveness:
- Highly Competitive – These hospitals tend to fill more quickly during the internship selection process.
- IMGs (International Medical Graduates) rarely get into these as their first choice, as spots are often given to UWI graduates first.
- Availability Varies Yearly – While these hospitals are generally in high demand, the number of available spots is not fixed and may change from year to year.
Type B Hospitals
- Regional hospitals that provide specialist services, but with fewer subspecialties compared to Type A hospitals.
- Typically handle a mix of primary, secondary, and some tertiary cases but may refer highly complex cases to Type A hospitals.
- Serve as major referral centers for surrounding parishes.
Availability & Competitiveness:
- More spots available compared to Type A hospitals, making them more accessible for IMGs and other graduates.
- Some hospitals are more competitive than others, depending on demand and location (e.g., Mandeville Regional and Spanish Town tend to be more popular).
- Internship experience varies – Some hospitals offer strong training in certain specialties, while others may have limitations based on resources and staffing.
- More opportunities for hands-on learning – In some cases, interns in Type B hospitals get more procedural experience due to fewer senior doctors handling cases.
