Internship is a mandatory one-year paid supervised training period after medical school graduation (don’t confuse this with clerkship), and is required in order to obtain a medical license in Jamaica.
Interns rotate through the four core specialties—Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynecology—spending three months in each of two specialties, and six weeks in the remaining two. While no medical exams are required to begin internship, relevant licensing exams must be completed by the end of the one-year internship period. Accepted exams include the CAMC exams, PLAB 1 & 2, or USMLE Step 1, 2, & 3 (see full exam guide).
IMPORTANT UPDATE: All overseas medical graduates who did not attend a CAAM-HP accredited institution and did not do clerkship in jamaica must first complete a mandatory 4-month observership in Jamaica before being eligible to apply for internship. This rule applies to both Jamaican and non-Jamaican nationals. Check if your school is CAAM-HP accredited here:https://caam-hp.org/programs/
Internship applications from these ^ candidates will automatically be redirected to observership placement. After successfully completing the observership, applicants can reapply for internship through the same official process.
NOTE: If you are already registered as a doctor in another country, internship and CAMC exams may not be required for licensing and could be bypassed depending on your qualifications. For more information regarding medical licensing requirements and application:
